Is it worth it?

Is online personal training actually worth it?

The honest answer is: it depends on you more than it depends on the coach.

Ten years ago, this question had an easy answer. Online coaching mostly meant a PDF program and a monthly email. Today the same phrase covers everything from live video sessions with a former Olympic coach to auto-generated workouts with a bot in the middle. The answer to 'is it worth it' depends heavily on which of those you're actually buying, and on what kind of client you are.

Who online training genuinely works for

Certain traits show up over and over in the clients who thrive online. If most of these sound like you, you're likely to get real value out of remote coaching.

Who online training tends to fail

This is the part most marketing pages leave out. Online coaching is not for everyone, and pretending otherwise is how people waste money.

What you're actually paying for

The value of good online coaching isn't the program. Programs are the easiest part of coaching. You're paying for judgment: the constant small decisions about when to push, when to back off, when to change exercises, when to eat more, when to stop overthinking and just train.

The tradeoff nobody talks about

Online training gives you access and flexibility. It takes away in-person cueing and the small social pressure of showing up. Most people overestimate how much they need the cueing and underestimate how much they miss the social pressure.

A better question than 'is it worth it'

Ask yourself this instead: what specifically do you want out of a coach, and can this coach deliver that remotely?

How to test it without committing a year

Most good online coaches offer a month-to-month option or a short trial block. Take one. Give it 60 days, not two weeks. The first month is mostly the coach learning you. If, by the end of month two, you're training more consistently, moving better, and looking forward to your check-ins, keep going. If not, the format probably isn't the fit.

A 60-second decision framework

If you're on the fence, answer these four questions honestly. Three or more yeses and online coaching is likely worth it for you right now. Two or fewer and you'll probably get more out of an in-person coach for the next 3–6 months.

Put this into practice

The honest answer depends on the coach you end up with, which is why it's worth reading a few real profiles before deciding.
